Reclaim Our Future Springs into Action
Extinction Rebellion Australia, 8 Oct 2021
A series of escalating disruptive actions is planned for Canberra from 16-30 October 2021, coinciding with a time of political intensity and the lead up to COP26.
The XR-powered ‘Reclaim Our Future’ affinity crew have been Covid-safe busy in lockdown-Canberra, plotting spectacular actions against Federal Parliament from 16 October. They aim to embarrass our laggard political ‘leaders’ in the lead-up to November’s international climate negotiations in Glasgow (COP26).
Reviled internationally for leading the world’s third-largest exporter of carbon emissions and the last in climate action, the Australian Prime Minister is unlikely to even attend.
Reclaim Our Future will see a series of escalating disruptive actions in Canberra from 16-30 October 2021, coinciding with a time of political intensity. Not only is Australia’s COP26 delegation preparing to depart during this final sitting fortnight of Parliament, but it is also when Environment Minister Sussan Ley’s appeal will be heard in which she disputes the Federal Court finding that she has a duty of care to protect young people from climate harm.
There will also be two important Parliamentary votes during this time – a Senate vote to disallow $50m to kick-start the huge Beetaloo Basin fracking project in the Northern Territory, and another attempt to pass Zali Steggall’s climate action bill. On October 18th, Zali Steggall MP will table a revised draft of her Climate Change Bill to federal parliament. The revisions reflect feedback from the inquiry process and introduce a new, short-term emissions reduction target of 60% by 2030 vs 2005 levels. In the absence of any policy from the government, the revised Bill provides Australia with an opportunity to adopt a meaningful climate commitment ahead of the COP26 summit which starts on October 31st 2021.
Reclaim Our Future aims to bring national and international attention to it all of these issues.
Once Parliament rises and COP26 begins, Reclaim Our Future’s focus will then shift to local electorates across the country for the duration of COP26 itself (1-12 November).
Lockdown-compliant pilot activities included protest picnics and ‘ghost prams’ actions with the allowable five participants. A police reaction(perhaps a pilot?) saw original ‘Pram Lady’ Violet Coco carted off, only to be dumped at a bus stop kilometres away…
Reclaim Our Future is planning a cascade of spectacular, effective and fun actions. You can register for email updates with resources, videos and training opportunities, and most importantly, information about where to be when it’s time to act together.

WHAT IS RECLAIM OUR FUTURE?
Reclaim Our Future is a series of escalating disruptive actions, powered by Extinction Rebellion, focussed on the Federal Government in the lead-up to the departure of the Australian delegation to the international climate negotiations in November (COP 26).
During the two sitting weeks of the spring session of Parliament, starting on October 18, there will be peaceful, spectacular, disruptive and sacrificial actions happening all around the country. These will (mostly) target MP’s offices or government buildings in an escalatory fashion doing ‘whatever it takes.’ These actions will be linked by the 'Duty of Care - Climate Emergency' messaging. A key location is Canberra and anyone that can safely get to the nation's capital should be aiming to do so.
After this sitting concludes on October 29, a further wave of Extinction Rebellion actions will begin, escalating during the 12 days of the COP (November 1-12).
These actions will be linked to other actions around the world and focussed around a message from the Global South: Your greed is killing us.
Come to the recruitment session this Friday (happening every week) if you haven’t been to one already.
