Anti-Adani activist in tree sit stops coal entering Adani’s Abbot Point Coal Terminal

The young woman from Canberra is perched 20 Meters off the ground in a tree sit tied to the Newlands Rail line in protest of Adani’s proposed Carmichael Coal Mine and the disastrous impacts it and other new mines in the Galilee Basin will have on climate change.

Jill’s protest is the third in as many days. On Tuesday 2 concerned citizens were arrested after shutting down Abbot Point for 4.5 hours and Wednesday saw over 30 people being denied entry to the Caley Valley Wetland after requested access to assess and clean the wetlands after Adani’s recent discharge of coal laden water into the habitat for over 200 species of birds.

The protester stated “We know the impacts climate change will have on our health from respiratory effects from coal mining to the spread of diseases like dengue & malaria. Climate change is a public health emergency, so I’m doing what I can and taking direct action to try and prevent the worst impacts of climate change.”

Across the globe movements are rapidly growing over the concern for climate change and keeping global temperature within the 1.5C recommended by theIntergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. One such movement, Extinction Rebellion (XR), has now spread to some 28+ countries and raises concerns about humanities progression towards a 6th mass extinction event.

Climate Change is seen as one of the hot topics of the upcoming federal election with Scott Morrison this week announcing a $2 billion climate solutions fund as part of his pre-election promises, despite the LNP repeatedly joking about and denying the effects of coal and climate change over the past few years.
