XRSA activist glues on to Santos Adelaide HQ in the run-up to the 2025 AGM

Extinction Rebellion Australia, 17 Mar 2025

The action sends a strong message to Santos shareholders: There is no future in oil and gas - divest now to rescue your money and stop fuelling catastrophic climate change.

As the climate emergency escalates, governments around the world are attempting to mitigate the worst impacts by promoting green energy sources. Meanwhile, Santos is expanding its operations to sell more gas overseas, forcing domestic prices through the roof and causing astronomical amounts of CO2 to be pumped into the atmosphere.

As Santos shareholders prepare to attend the April 2025 AGM, Extinction Rebellion activist Anna Slynn glued herself onto one of the entrances of the Santos Building at 60 Flinders St, Adelaide.

Nearby, a pink dinghy marked 'STRANDED ASSETS' appeared to be beached on a pile of sand and mulch, blocking the main entrance.

A speaker very like Kevin Gallagher, Santos Managing Director and CEO made a guest appearance, attempting to convince onlookers that carbon capture and storage are the magical solution.

Anna was arrested and charged with 'disorderly or offensive behaviour', with a court appearance set for May. While glued on, Anna shared this powerful message, directed at Santos shareholders heading to the Santos AGM next month:

"Please consider the complete recklessness of this company. Where you invest your money really matters. The climate crisis is here. Think of what our communities are suffering now, how much more we will suffer in the future and how much we can realistically take.

"The world is moving away from fossil fuels because we have to in order to mitigate the climate crisis. Meanwhile, Santos is using your money to build more and more gas infrastructure.

"Emissions from burning all that gas will derail any commitments we have made to prevent the worst-case scenario - an unliveable planet. Is this really OK with you?"

Extinction Rebellion SA spokesperson Gemma Weedall said: “Santos gas fuels the increase in extreme weather events we’ve already experienced across the country in the past year – from droughts and wildfires to cyclones and floods.

“Carbon Capture and Storage is blatant greenwashing. It won’t save the industry or reduce emissions in any meaningful way.

“Our message today is to the shareholders: Santos is sinking – jump ship now! The world is necessarily moving away from fossil fuels in response to the worsening climate crisis, and it is only reckless companies like Santos that are willing to risk everything we hold dear to keep exploiting fossil fuels”.
